Mozambique: Foreign job offers must be checked to avoid human trafficking

Data published yesterday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicate that Mozambique’s 2016 inflation to September stood at 14.70 percent and annual inflation at 24.92 percent.
The data collected for the previous month in the cities of Maputo, Beira and Nampula indicate that the country recorded a rise in the general price levels of around 2.71 percent. This figure represents monthly inflation accelerating by 1.44 percentage points (pp).

Analysing monthly inflation by product, highlights include the increase in the price of rice (3.8 percent), cooking oil (8.2 percent), peanuts (10.4 percent), detergent powder (21.3 percent), soap (13.1 percent), corn flour (2.3 percent) and live chicken (8.0 percent). These contributed 1.10 pp to total monthly inflation.
Some products, especially onion, tomato, potato and garlic went the general trend of price rising, contributing 0.22 pp negative to the final figure.
According to the INE, inflation from January to September this year was about 14.70 percent. Power and non-alcoholic beverages stood out, contributing 9.64 pp to the general behaviour of prices.
Increase in the price of rice, corn flour, cooking oil, peanut, onion, brown sugar and horse mackerel contributed 7.17 pp to the general price escalation trend.
The INE also shows that over the same period in 2015, the country recorded inflation of around 24.92 percent. The power and non-alcoholic beverages sector recorded the highest increase in prices with 40.04 percent, contributing 17.87 pp to total annual inflation.
Prices increased in all three collection centres (Maputo, Beira and Nampula). Maputo City recorded the highest monthly inflation (3.48 percent), followed by the city of Nampula (2.02 percent) and the city of Beira (1.78 percent).
In terms of sharing the recorded monthly inflation for the country (2.71 percent), the city of Maputo was the one that most influenced this trend, contributing with about 1.73 pp, the cities of Nampula and Beira contributed to the total monthly inflation in the country with 0.68 pp and 0.30 pp respectively.
From January to September, the three cities saw their prices worsen in Nampula by 15.52 percent, followed by the city of Beira with 14.77 percent, and finally the city of Maputo 14.15 percent.
Year on year the city of Beira was the one that had the largest increase in the general level of prices, at 25.86 percent. The cities of Maputo and Nampula registered price increases of 25.21 percent and 24.05 percent respectively.
