The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has called general elections, including the seventh presidential election, for October 9, 2024, the Presidency of the Republic announced in a statement today.
The next presidential, legislative, provincial assemblies and provincial governor elections will thus be held “simultaneously, across the entire national territory of the Republic of Mozambique and on a single day, October 9, 2024”, the statement says.
The head of state has also called for the holding of presidential and legislative elections abroad for the same day.
Setting the date for the elections resulted from a proposal by the National Election Commission (CNE) and after “hearing the Council of State”, adds the Presidency of the Republic.
The Mozambican Council of State ruled “favourably” on Friday to the holding of the seventh presidential and legislative elections and the fourth provincial elections on October 9, 2024, the Presidency of the Republic announced the same day.

Article 165 of the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique establishes that it is incumbent upon the Council of State, “in general, to advise the President of the Republic in the exercise of his functions”, and obligatorily to pronounce on the calling of general elections.
Filipe Nyusi, also leader of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), has been President of the Republic since January 15, 2015, having been re-elected to the second and last term constitutionally foreseen five years later.
Mozambique enters a new electoral cycle this year, with municipal elections on October 11 and general elections in 2024 – which should include district elections.
However, through a revision to the Constitution enacted by the president on Friday, the district elections were postponed until “conditions for their realisation” are created.
