President Filipe Nyusi has sent a message to the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, conveying solidarity with Pope Francis, who has recently undergone surgery, and hopes for his speedy recovery.
“At this time of concern, we want to express our solidarity with the Holy Father,” the message reads, adding wishes for a ” fast and full recovery” from his abdominal surgery in Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Wednesday.
“This is how we join you, the Catholic faithful and other solitary souls from around the world, praying for his recovery in the hope that the Holy Father will soon be able to continue his mission of evangelization,” President Nyusi writes.
Pope Francis, 86 years old, is “well, awake and conscious”, according to the surgeon who operated on him, Sergio Alfieri. The surgery lasted three hours and proceeded without complications.
The leader of the Catholic Church is expected to remain in hospital for “five to seven days”, he added.
The Vatican had previously announced the cancellation of the Pope’s agenda until June 18.
