The President of the Republic has recommended that medium and long-term strategies be found to help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) eliminate weaknesses and weather crises in the business sector.
The exhortation was made at the opening ceremony of the 1st National Conference of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, where the president said the government was fulfilling its role and creating a better business environment, and that it was now up to the companies to take advantage of the existing facilities.
Filipe Nyusi says he understands that the accounts of the national business community have been in the red for years, and that Covid-19, natural disasters, armed attacks (in the Centre), and terrorism (in the North) have worsened the crisis, but reiterates that the solution lies with the companies themselves.
“We cannot fall, systematically, into agony and dependence on a few, or on claims for subsidies or protectionist surcharges of only short term durability. We have calamity, we have Covid-19, we have Palma. But if we continue to depend on subsidies, the country will not be sustainable,” the President of the Republic said.
Nyusi avers that it is necessary to start exploring the international market, which is open through various agreements signed, especially with SADC countries.
“It is obvious that we are exposed to the SADC markets, to the entire African market, and also globally. We have no choice but to rely on mass, quality production to meet the international and regional demand. We have to increase the level of exports,” he stressed.
Filipe Nyusi notes that there are funds to finance youth initiatives, and contribute to the improvement of the business environment. “This year we will finance more than 200 projects, mainly in Gaza and Manica,” he said.
The 1st National Conference of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises takes place under the slogan “Creating synergies for the Dynamization of MSMEs towards Industrialization in Mozambique” and aims to find solutions for the more than 24,000 micro, small and medium enterprises operating in the country.
