President Filipe Nyusi will speak to the nation today regarding the first 100 days of governance since his inauguration on January 15 marked on Saturday, in a message which will serve to share with Mozambicans the current state of the government project, perspectives and challenges.
As across the globe, the Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the most significant features of this period, forcing the Mozambican government to review its plans and goals and adapt to a new reality.
Economic growth, expected to be above 4% this year, has been revised downwards to between 2.2% and 3.8%.
Oil company ExxonMobil has announced that the final investment decision of one of the three gas megaprojects in the Rovuma basin has been postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The other two megaprojects – one led by Total in Area 1 and the other on a floating platform in Area 4 – are on schedule.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) decided on Friday to give the government of Mozambique over US$309 million to help combat the pandemic and ease the balance of payments and the budget.
Despite the effects of the new coronavirus, Nyusi’s priority for the mandate, peacebuilding following the agreement with the opposition in August 2019, remains underway.
The head of state and Ossufo Momade, the president of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the main opposition party), met 10 days ago and advocated the swift disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of Renamo guerrillas.
However, the biggest security concern is the province of Cabo Delgado, whose armed violence the National Council for Defence and Security last week classified as an external terrorist threat.
It is a problem that persists in a country where thousands of people in the north and centre are still recovering and seeking to ensure their food security a year after the destruction caused by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, two of the strongest ever in the hemisphere, and whose reconstruction activities are also included in government plans.
