President Filipe Nyusi is to address the nation today on the state of emergency in force since August 6 and ending on September 8, the Presidency of Mozambique has annonced.
The address will be made from the Head of State’s office in Maputo, at 8 p.m. this Friday (September 4), according to the Presidency of the Republic.
On September 1, Mozambique entered the second phase of the resumption of social and economic activities that had been suspended, within the scope of the second state of emergency in face of the Covid-19.
The first phase of easing the restrictions imposed in the context of combating Covid-19 began on August 18, with the resumption of face-to-face classes in higher and technical education, in the academies of the Defence and Security Forces and in teacher and health personnel training institutions.
The first phase also opened space for religious services, but the number of participants mst not exceed 50, while in funeral ceremonies the number of people allowed has increased from 10 to 50.
The last phase of the process is scheduled for October 1st and covers the resumption of Grade 12 classes, the last year of secondary education in Mozambique.
“As for pre-school, primary and general secondary education, their resumption is dependent on the verification of the conditions that are imposed by the health authorities and the inspection bodies, clearly obeying the pandemic trend in our country”, declared on August 5th the Mozambican head of state, adding that the same condition applies to resumption of collective sports.
Mozambique has lived with restrictions in the past five months, after a first state of emergency that started on April 1 and has had three extensions.
Since the announcement of the first case on March 22, the country has recorded a total of 4,207 cases, 26 deaths and 2,370 people are reported to have recovered, according to the latest updates.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 863,679 deaths and infected more than 26 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
