Queen Letizia of Spain and Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday expressed their countries’ share desire to step up bilateral relations, with cooperation between companies a priority, an official for Mozambique’s government said.
“This visit reinforces the relationships of friendship and solidarity and, above all, opens a new page in the history of our relationship, with the challenge that has been set for economic cooperation among businesses,” said José Pacheco, Mozambique’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation.
The minister spoke moments after a meeting between Letizia and Nyusi at the latter’s palace in Maputo.
The visit comes after Spain’s voters went to the polls on Saturday to elect a new parliament. The governing Socialists increased their share of the vote and seats, though still without a majority in parliament on their own.
Spain’s monarch, Letizia’s husband King Felipe, has an essentially ceremonial role in the appointment of a new prime minister.
