President of Mozambique Daniel Chapo has expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Rwanda in the areas of economy and trade, affirming the need to operationalize instruments already signed between the two countries.
“President [Paul] Kagame and I held talks […] where we assessed the current state of bilateral cooperation and concluded that our relations are going through a positive phase. Meanwhile, we noted the need to operationalize the instruments already signed between our two countries, as well as to strengthen bilateral relations in the economic and trade sphere,” said Daniel Chapo, who arrived in Rwanda yesterday for a two-day visit at the invitation of his counterpart, Paul Kagame.
Priority areas for strengthening relations between the two African countries including security, agriculture, trade, industry and investment have already been identified, according to the Mozambican head of state.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame reiterated that Mozambique and Rwanda have much in common “and much to offer each other”.
“We are pleased that they will visit some of our key industries and meet members of our private sector. This is a good opportunity to centralize our business network for the benefit of our nations,” Kagame stated.
He also said he was confident that Mozambique and Rwanda were on the right path, cultivating “the already excellent” partnership.
Currently, the two countries cooperate primarily in the military field, with a force of more than 2,000 Rwandan soldiers fighting extremist groups operating in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, since 2021. They are specifically protecting the area where the French company TotalEnergies has an LNG exploration project, following an agreement between the two governments, according to official sources.
This force began to be reinforced in April 2024, following the progressive withdrawal of the military mission from other southern African countries.
