The President of Mozambique has granted an audience to the Higher Mass Media Council (Conselh Superior da Comunicação Social), who reported to Filipe Nyusi on the lines that had guided its five years in office. President Nyusi in reply congratulated the organ on the gains achieved with regard to the journalist’s portfolio.
During the term of its mandate, the Council revisited the regulatory framework of the Media Law that is due to replace the already “old” Law No. 18/91, of 10 August, known as the Press Law. The CSCS has also actively participated in the formation of a long-awaited law regulating television and radio.
During this Monday’s meeting at the Presidency of the Republic, Higher Mass Media Council chairperson Tomás Vieira Mário spoke about journalism and human dignity, and the working relationship of journalists with the institutions to which they are linked.
For his part, the President of the Republic congratulated the Council on the achievements of the media in the country, while also delivering some recommendations.
The impending Media Law will define the rules applicable to the exercise of journalism, establishing the rights and duties of professionals, and adapting these to the current legal and constitutional framework and pertinent technological advances.
