Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Tuesday praised the role of Mozambican women in the fight against the new coronavirus in the country, admitting, however, that there are still challenges in the inclusion and protection of women.
“The woman, the source of life, has the task of shouldering the great mission of ensuring the survival of hygiene and safety measures within the family,” Nyusi said, in a message alluding to the Mozambican Women’s Day, which is celebrated in the country on Tuesday.
For him, although the mission of disseminating and adopting preventive measures against Covid-19 is for everyone, women assume a special role in this process.
“To the women, the mother manager of the home, the responsibilities are increased,” Nyusi said, reiterating his executive’s commitment to gender equality and the fight against domestic violence.
“Even with the advances made over the years and the changes we have witnessed, we still have a long way to go to make Mozambican women feel protected and able to contribute to the collective efforts for the development of the country,” he said.
In Mozambique, 7 April is the holiday that marks the death in 1971 of Josina Machel, the first wife of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique.
Josina Machel, a Mozambican heroine, played an important role in involving women in the struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime, having been one of the founders of the Women’s Detachment of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), as well as being head of the Social Affairs Section and head of the Women’s Section in the Foreign Relations Department.
