Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, said this Friday the fight against “terrorism” in the northern province of Cabo Delgado was an example of the success of “African solutions to African problems”.
“In the fight against terrorism in Mozambique, in the province of Cabo Delgado, this principle of African solutions to African problems can be seen,” Nyusi said.
The Mozambican head of state was speaking during the “Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2030: Lessons from Mozambique” conference, held in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, by the UK’s Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).
How can lessons from Mozambique 🇲🇿 help countries to break free from “conflict traps”?

The joint action of the defence and security forces of Mozambique, Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the fight against armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado shows that intra-African cooperation can produce satisfactory results, he added.
“The defence and security forces of Mozambique, Rwanda and SADC are engaged in the successful fight against terrorists, gradually returning peace to the inhabitants of the districts previously occupied by terrorists,” stressed Filipe Nyusi.
The Mozambican head of state is in Addis Ababa to attend the 36th African Union summit, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency for five years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and SADC, liberating districts near gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.
The conflict has left one million people displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and around 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
