President Daniel Chapo today met representatives of the national private sector and investors from the oil, gas and mining industries to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the economic development of Cabo Delgado.
“Since the elections, we have seen violent demonstrations all over the country, with a focus on Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, but they are now decreasing. We are monitoring them and we believe that we will continue to work together to resolve this situation as quickly as possible,” the president said.
The meeting was attended by national and multinational companies, such as Total, Eni and ExxonMobil, which reaffirmed their commitment to continue investing in the region. The businesspeople raised concerns about access routes, security, infrastructure and illegal taxes. Despite the challenges, they expressed optimism and willingness to contribute to the reforms underway.
The participants called for greater flexibility in financial management and the reduction of bureaucracy in government processes. Another relevant point was the need to strengthen local content, ensuring that Mozambican companies have priority in the provision of services and goods for major projects in the province.
Businesspeople in the sand mining sector requested stricter monitoring to prevent the uncontrolled exploitation of mineral resources by foreign companies. In addition, they suggested the implementation of a sustainable industrialization plan and the local processing of at least 10% of the extracted resources, promoting greater added value for the country.
The meeting ended with a commitment to continue dialogue to strengthen the Mozambican economy.
The president gave assurances that all issues raised would be analysed and that a monitoring matrix would be created to ensure that the concerns of the private sector are addressed.
“We will overcome these issues of protests as quickly as possible. We are leading a dialogue in which we will soon talk to everyone. This will allow us to create a good business environment and continue to develop our country,” concluded Chapo.
