The president of the College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Order of Doctors of Mozambique has resigned from his post. António Bugalho’s letter of resignation was submitted to the Chairman of the Order of Doctors, Gilberto Manhiça, on the 10th of August (Tuesday).
In his resignation document, which started circulating on social networks last Friday and to which ‘Carta’ has had access, António Bugalho explains that he disagreed with the way vacancies were being filled after the specialty’s final exams, and had misgivings over fair competition.
According to Dr Bugalho, newly graduated specialists were placed in residency hospitals, mainly in the Maputo Central Hospital, to fill vacancies occupied in others parts of the country by doctors with at least two years of independent clinical experience, and only after a competitive selection process.
“This lack of transparency in placements devalues the specialist’s performance during his/her residency and final assessment and, subsequently, his/her performance as an independent clinician,” Dr Bugalho explained, while emphasising that “none of this has to do with the Order of Doctors of Mozambique”.
Contacted by ‘Carta’, António Bugalho confirmed the authenticity of the document, but refused to comment on it, claiming that the Ministry of Health did not yet know about it.
