The Mozambican president on Friday inaugurated the Beira General Hospital in Sofala, in the centre of the country, with the capacity to serve around 770,000 people, saying that it is the “most modern” unit and a “great achievement” for the country.
‘This is one of the largest hospitals built in the country in the post-independence period. It’s not presumptuous to say that it’s the most modern hospital the country has. The other hospitals are big, but I’m talking about the most modern,’ said Filipe Nyusi, during the inauguration of the hospital in Sofala province capital city.
The Beira General Hospital has two floors, 300 beds and 390 staff from different specialities, with a capacity to serve around 770,000 inhabitants of the city of Beira, the provincial capital, said the head of state.
Filipe Nyusi also highlighted the hospital’s quality services, modern equipment and resilience to climate change, asking the public to value the infrastructure that has everything it takes to become a ‘national reference’ unit.
‘There has been a huge effort to build this resilient hospital (…). My request is this: that people value and maintain [the hospital],’ appealed the president, thanking the Netherlands and France for their support in building the hospital, without mentioning the amounts involved.
For the president, the hospital symbolises a ‘new era’ in terms of ‘quantity and quality’ health care in the province and neighbouring districts, and should also serve as a training ground for students from local health institutes.
On the occasion, the Mozambican minister of health, Armindo Tiago, said that during Filipe Nyusi’s two terms in office at least 10 hospital units had been inaugurated in the country, three of them in Sofala province.
Mozambique has a total of 1,778 health units, 107 of which are health posts, three are specialised hospitals, four central hospitals, seven are general, seven provincial, 22 rural and 47 district, according to the latest figures from the ministry of health consulted by Lusa.
