President Filipe Nyusi yesterday addressed condolences to Turkey and Syria after an earthquake there claimed 3,000 lives, a note published on social media revealed.
“I want, at this time of consternation, to address on behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, our condolences to both countries, and express solidarity,” the president wrote.
The head of state urged the international community “to provide its support at this delicate moment for the Turkish and Syrian peoples”.
“I would like to encourage the authorities to remain committed to rescuing people who are still trapped under the rubble,” he added.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey near the border with Syria at 4:17 a.m., and was one of the strongest there in the last century.
The death toll has now topped 4,000, according to the latest balance, with reports of thousands more injured.
