The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, this Tuesday congratulated former Portuguese prime minister António Costa on his election as President of the European Council, highlighting the “significant vote of confidence” from the member states of the European Union (EU).
“It was an expressive vote of confidence from the heads of State and Government of the 27 member states of the European Union in your ability to promote unity among member states and the strategic agenda for the next five years,” Filipe Nyusi says in a statement released to the media.
The head of state said that Costa can count on Mozambique to facilitate the country’s various agreements with the EU, as well as to deepen the partnership, solidarity and cooperation.
“On behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, I offer our sincere congratulations and best wishes for success in your direction of the Council, the main body of the organisation,” the Mozambican president says.
The former Portuguese prime minister was elected President of the European Council for a term of two-and-a-half years on Thursday night, and will take office on December 1.
António Costa will be the first Portuguese and the first socialist to head the European Council, which brings together the heads of Government and State of the European Union, and will succeed the Belgian Charles Michel, in the position since 2019.
Prime minister of Portugal between November 2015 and April 2024, António Costa headed three governments, the last of which (2022-2024) with a Socialist Party absolute majority in parliament.
He resigned as prime minister on November 7, 2023, after the Portuguese Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that he was being investigated as part of the so-called “Operation Influencer”.
On May 24, the former socialist prime minister was, at his own request, heard by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP), without being named a defendant in the case.
