Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, has said that the country has a strong infrastructure with potential for cooperation with China, praising the Asian country’s social and economic development model.
President Nyusi noted that the Port of Maputo, in the south of the country, is used by neighbouring Zimbabwe, Eswatini and South Africa; in the centre, the Port of Beira serves Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe; and in the north, Zambia and Malawi use the deep-water port of Nacala.
The Mozambican head of state was speaking at a meeting with Shanghai Municipal Council, as part of his working visit to the People’s Republic of China.
He cited China as an example of a development model, defending the importance of bilateral cooperation.
“We want to welcome the economic advances not only of Shanghai, but also of the whole of China. President Xi Jinping’s policies give us strength and freedom for development,” the Mozambican head of state declared.
Nyusi also praised the Chinese government’s willingness to help the country in the fight against terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique.
The Mozambican president began a six-day working visit to the People’s Republic of China on Saturday at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, according to a statement from the Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Mozambique.
According to the press release, the Mozambican head of state will participate in the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the China-Mozambique Business Forum.
