President Filipe Nyusi was set to fly to Kenya today to attend the inauguration of President-elect William Ruto, the Maputo presidency announced in a statement this Monday (12-09).
“The visit of the Mozambican head of state comes in response to the invitation made by his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the President-elect of Kenya,” the statement details.
In addition to attending William Ruto’s inauguration in Nairobi, Filipe Nyusi will seek “to deepen ties of brotherhood, friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the two peoples and countries”, the statement adds.
Accompanying the Mozambican head of state on his two-day visit are the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Manuel José Gonçalves.
On Tuesday, Kenya’s outgoing Deputy President and President-elect William Ruto will be sworn in as the new head of state after the country’s Supreme Court upheld his election victory last week.
Ruto will become Kenya’s fifth president since independence from the United Kingdom in 1963 and replaces Kenyatta, who was serving his second term, the final one permitted by the country’s constitution.
The Supreme Court’s decision came after weeks of uncertainty after top opposition leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga, who came second in the August 9 presidential election, called the election results illegal.
The country’s highest court however rejected his claims.
