President Nyusi on Friday inaugurated the Caniçado-Mapai road, in Gaza province, in the south of the country.
Construction of the 190-kilometre was fully financed by the Mozambican government, at just over two billion meticais. It is part of a 300-kilometre route which extends to the district of Chicualacuala.
The section is part of the government’s vision of providing alternative routes to National Road Number One (EN1).
In his speech , President Nyusi highlighted the road’s contribution to boosting the local economy, and that of the province in general. But he also called for careful driving, to avoid bloodshed on the roads.
“The delivery of the road means improvement in transitability and safety in the transport of people and goods. It cannot be a death certificate, a road of blood. We appeal for prudent driving, avoiding speeding and never in a state of drunkenness and fatigue,” the president said.
