The entry into operation this Monday of the 5-star ‘Jasmine Bay’ hotel in Metangula, Lago district, has opened space for the development of tourism in Niassa province, President Filipe Nyusi said at the inauguration of the Mozambican private capital-funded project on Monday.
President Nyusi predicted that the hotel would boost the economy of Niassa province and the country in general, by attracting international tourists to the beauties of Lake Niassa and the nearby Niassa Special Reserve in Mecula district.
The head of state said that the venture would create a new dynamic, providing jobs in sectors such as fishing, agriculture, and transport.
The project is evidence that the government programme placing Niassa on the list of five tourist destinations that include Maputo, Gorongosa reserve and Vilankulo is being implemented, he said.
The narrative that the Mozambican bank of Lake Niassa was under-explored in the tourism sector was now outdated, the President of the Republic added.
In Nipepe, addressing local residents on the sidelines of the inauguration of the district judicial court there on Monday, President Nyusi also commented that the implementation of the graphite extraction and processing plant in the district would boost the employability of young people in this part of the province.
At the moment, the enterprise employs 480 workers, a number that could reach up to 1,000 employees, working in three shifts, at peak production.
Starting in the first half of next year, the graphite processing factory will produce up to 100,000 tons of graphite per annum over an area of 2,000 hectares, under a 50-year concession.
The first of two ore exploitation and processing lines are currently in the finishing stages.
