Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday expressed interest in turning to China to obtain funding for the rehabilitation of National Road No. 1, the country’s main highway, and for construction of the new Mozambican parliamentary infrastructures.
Filipe Nyusi’s intention was announced by the minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Veronica Macamo, speaking after a courtesy meeting between the Mozambican head of state and member of the political ‘bureau’ and director of the office of the foreign affairs commission of the central committee of the communist party of China, Yang Jiechi.
“The President spoke of the need to support the rehabilitation of National Road No. 1, which we all know links our country from one end to the other,” Verónica Macamo said.

At the meeting, the head of state also discussed the interest in counting on Chinese funding for the construction of the Parliament’s headquarters, Macamo added.
On the other hand, Nyusi praised the “leadership” of China’s president, Xi Jinping, in strengthening relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
The Mozambican authorities estimate that US$750 million (718 million euros) is needed for the rehabilitation and maintenance of National Road 1, which is over 2,400 kilometres long and links the country’s three regions, namely the south, centre and north.
The Mozambican parliament plans to build a parliamentary city on the northern shore of Maputo bay, with a new hemicycle and flats for members of parliament, most of whom live in rented houses when they travel to the capital for plenary sessions.
China has in recent years funded large-scale public infrastructure in Mozambique, such as the Maputo ring road, Zimpeto National Stadium and a new Maputo International Airport.
