President Nyusi has sent Parliament an addendum to the report on the four-month Covid-19 state of emergency, revealing that the country has already received almost half the aid requested from partners, a parliamentary source said on Sunday.
The information comes after the non-governmental organisation Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) criticised the lack of transparency concerning financial support received during the state of emergency.
In reaction to these criticisms, a parliamentary source told Lusa that the information is contained in an addendum sent by Filipe Nyusi to Parliament on Friday, almost a day after the report by the Mozambican head of state was sent.
On March 23, the Mozambican government asked partners in Maputo for US$700 million (€594 million) in financial support to cover the deficit in the 2020 State Budget caused by the pandemic, as well as to finance combating the disease and supporting the poorest members of society.
The 12-page addendum explains that Mozambique has already received US$340.8 million (€289 million) of the requested amount.
“Of this amount, we received US$309 million (€262 million) for direct budget and balance of payments support from the International Monetary Fund, and US$15 million (€13 million) in the form of debt service relief,” the document details.
Of the amount received from the IMF, 1 billion meticais (€12 million) was channelled into a credit line supporting micro, small and medium-sized companies, the document adds.
Apart from the IMF, other cooperation partners have offered direct support to the health sector totalling US$16.8 million (€14 million).
“In order to safeguard the transparency of the intervention, a bank account under management by the Ministry of Health was opened, through which the funds disbursed by the partners will flow,” the document reads, adding that the country is still awaiting the disbursement of several public commitments.
Since the announcement of the first case, on March 22, Mozambique has recorded a total of 1,946 cases of Covid-19, 13 fatalities and 654 recovered.
