The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, has extended condolences to the Catholic Church on the death of Father Vicente Berenguer Llopis, which occurred on October 21, 2025, in Teulada, Spain.
In a message, the Head of State says that on behalf of the people and Government of Mozambique, and on his own behalf, he expresses to His Holiness and the entire Catholic community, especially the Mozambican community, his deepest condolences for the loss of this missionary, who dedicated much of his life to serving the Mozambican people.

Father Vicente Berenguer served in Mozambique from 1967 until his retirement in 2023, standing out for his courage and dedication to the cause of justice, particularly by denouncing to the world the Wiriyamu Massacre, which occurred in Tete on December 16, 1972, in which more than 300 defenceless Mozambicans perished.
During his long stay in Mozambique, Father Vicente Berenger made an invaluable contribution to education, supporting the construction of school infrastructure and the education of disadvantaged children, driven by the conviction that human education is the main weapon for the country’s development.
His work was widely recognized, and he received several international distinctions for his commitment to the common good.
