President Filipe Nyusi yesterday dismissed Stela Pinto Novo Zeca from her position as Secretary of State for the province of Sofala, in the center of the country, the Presidency of the Republic said in a statement.
The note does not mention the reasons for the dismissal, at a time when Stela Pinto Novo Zeca is running for mayor of the city of Beira, capital of the province of Sofala, in the municipal elections on October 11th.
The politician is running for office with the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the party in power whose president is Filipe Nyusi.
The Center for Public Integrity (CIP), a Mozambican non-governmental organization (NGO), criticised Stela Pinto Novo Zeca’s candidacy for mayor while still serving as Secretary of State, considering it illegal.
More than 11,500 candidates from 11 political parties, three party coalitions and eight groups of citizens began the electoral campaign for Mozambican local councils to be held on October 11 at 00:00 on Tuesday, amid calls for a peaceful process.
