The Mozambican head of state on Tuesday condemned an attack on the Malian armed forces, which killed at least 54 people, considering that it is time for joint action against the roots of terrorism and extremism in Africa.
“These actions urge us to join together in a joint and coordinated mission to eradicate not only the demonstrations but also the moral and material roots and constituents of these heinous crimes that tend to spread in Africa,” Filipe Nyusi said, quoted in a presidency note distributed to the press on Tuesday.
The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group called for the 1 November attack on a military base in northern Mali, which killed 54 people, including 53 soldiers and one civilian.
The attack came a week after the death of IS chief Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who was killed during a US military attack on Syria.
For Filipe Nyusi, the terrorist attacks are creating a climate of instability, ungovernability and insecurity, undermining dreams of progress and well-being.
“Therefore, on behalf of the people, the government of Mozambique and in my own, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the people and government of Mali and, in particular, to the families of the perished soldiers,” he said.
Mali has been the target of terrorist attacks since 2012, following a coup d’état that left control of the north of the country in the hands of Tuareg rebel groups supported by terrorist cells.
In 2013, the action of the ‘jihadists’ was limited by an international military intervention led by France, but large areas of Mali, especially in the north and centre, escape state control, benefiting terrorist groups.
