President Nyusi on Sunday congratulated Mozambique basketball athlete Leia “Tanucha” Dongue on her ‘honourable mention’ by FIBA-Africa as among the best basketball players in Africa.
On its website, FIBA-Africa names the international Mozambican basketball player among the 12 best African athletes of the last decade.
“We learned, with emotion and pride, of the nomination of Leia Dongue, athlete of the national women’s basketball team, as one of the 12 best basketball players on the African continent. This comes at the moment when we celebrate the 20 years of the consecration of Maria de Lurdes Mutola as Olympic track and field champion in the 800 meters category, which both dignifies and honours us as Mozambicans. This is also a demonstration that, with hard work, we are able to achieve great goals,” the message from the President of the Republic reads.
Filipe Nyusi congratulated the athlete “for her brilliant sports career, as well as all Mozambicans who strive to raise high our flag and identity”.
“Our compatriot’s feat is yet another reason for us to unite ever more closely, as a nation that rises with the contribution of each of its children, especially the emancipated Mozambican woman,” the message concludes.
