Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday condemned the attack on US presidential candidate Donald Trump at the weekend, describing it as an “unacceptable act of violence” in a democracy.
“Violence in any form cannot and must not be tolerated. Attacks on the lives of any individual, especially political leaders, represent a serious threat to democratic principles and social peace,” reads a message of solidarity that Nyusi sent to his US counterpart, Joe Biden,
In the note released on Monday by Nyusi’s office, the head of state expresses his wish for a speedy recovery for Trump, and salutes law and order organisations for the “prompt measures taken to avoid the worst” in the wake of the incident.
He reaffirms his “confidence in the democratic institutions of the United States of America and in the capacity of its people to overcome this challenge with the resilience and determination they have always shown.”
Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt on Saturday night in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a campaign rally.
The former president and presidential candidate was slightly wounded in one ear and was removed from the stage where his last rally before the Republican Party convention, which started on Monday, was taking place.
Two people died in the attack, including the gunman, who had opened fire from a rooftop near the rally site. He has been identified by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20.
