The President of the Republic, Daniel Francisco Chapo, held a meeting with the president of the Brazil-Africa Chamber of Commerce, Sinfrônio Júnior, in his office on Tuesday, to discuss new bilateral cooperation initiatives in agriculture.
Leaving the meeting, Sinfrônio Júnior highlighted Mozambique’s “great agricultural potential” and expressed the commitment of the Brazilian business sector to supporting the country in its fight against hunger and poverty by transforming the agricultural sector with advanced technologies.
“We were here in the Office of the President of the Republic to discuss some matters related to agriculture and the partnership with Brazil, with Brazilian rural businesses, for the development of Mozambican agriculture,” stated Sinfrônio Júnior, emphasizing that Mozambique has “one of the greatest agricultural potentials in the world”.
Sinfrônio Júnior praised President Daniel Chapo’s stance, describing the meeting as productive and revealing a clear vision for the country’s future.
“The contact with the President of the Republic was fantastic. The president is very enthusiastic about agriculture and sees agriculture and agro-industry as the way forward for the country’s development,” he stated.
According to Sinfrônio Júnior, Mozambique’s commitment to agro-industry could create significant job opportunities for local youth and farmers. “Agriculture will be a source of employment for young Mozambicans, for Mozambican farmers, and so on. There is only one way out of poverty and hunger, and that is through agriculture,” he emphasized.
He described the Mozambican head of state’s reaction to the proposals discussed as “satisfactory”, observing that the modernization of agriculture is at the heart of the government’s strategy. “The president’s reaction was satisfactory, considering that his government has the goal of transforming Mozambique into an agricultural powerhouse, modernizing Mozambican agriculture, and eliminating total and absolute poverty and hunger through agriculture,” he said.
During the meeting, previous experiences of cooperation between the two countries were also discussed, particularly agricultural projects already implemented with Brazilian support. “We already have some important agricultural projects underway here in Brazil,” recalled Sinfrônio Júnior.
He also highlighted Brazil’s new commitment to the African context. “The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil recently held a meeting with all the ministers of agriculture in Africa, and representatives of the Mozambican government through the Ministry of Agriculture were also present at that meeting,” Sinfrônio Júnior observed.
“The proposal to create the Global Alliance Against Hunger, an initiative led by Brasília, emerged as a result of this continental summit,” he noted.
“The [Brazilian] president [Lula da Silva] created the Global Alliance Against Hunger, in which Mozambique can participate in the context of eradicating hunger and complete and absolute poverty on the African continent and other parts of the world,” he announced.
Yesterday’s meeting reaffirms the common interest between Mozambique and Brazil in consolidating economic cooperation focused on sustainable rural development, job creation, and food security, at a time when both countries share converging visions on the global challenges facing the agricultural sector.
