Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has called for greater commitment by the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) in the fight against terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, insisting that the best personnel must be on the front lines of the military operations.
Chapo was speaking on Thursday in the southern municipality of Matola, during the main ceremony marking the 61st anniversary of the FADM, which is celebrated on 25 September, marking the beginning of the country’s armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule, in 1964.
“Terrorism cannot be defeated by leaving the best soldiers, the best personnel, the family members, or the children of the leaders in their offices. Every citizen who is part of the Defense and Security Forces must go to the northern theatre of operations (i.e. Cabo Delgado). This is non-negotiable”, Chapo declared.
The President believes that there have been significant improvements in the security situation compared to previous years. However, he warned that the terrorist groups are changing their methods of operation, moving to the deployment of improvised explosive devices, attacks on civilians, and kidnappings.
These threats, he said, require strengthening the operational capacity of the FADM. “Our military has demonstrated courage, discipline, and resilience, recovering territories and enabling the safe return of the population. However, increased investment is needed to neutralize the threats in Cabo Delgado”, he added.
Cabo Delgado has seen a resurgence of rebel attacks since July, with the districts of Chiúre, Muidumbe, Quissanga, Ancuabe, Meluco, and most recently, Mocímboa da Praia being targeted, with several deaths reported.
In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks in northern Mozambique, most claimed by the extremist group Islamic State, a 36 per cent increase over the previous year, according to a study released by the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), an academic institution of the U.S. Department of Defence.
During the event, Chapo paid tribute to the veterans of the National Liberation Struggle, stating that “25 September is a milestone in liberation history and a tribute to those who fell for independence. This moment is also a commitment of honor to continue defending the ideals for which our heroes fought.”
As part of the celebrations, he awarded 724 Mozambicans with honorary titles and medals. “The tribute is not a payment, but a symbolic gesture to recognize your sacrifice and dedication to the country”, said Chapo.
“The nation demands the participation of each and every one of us”, he stressed “Our heroes have given us an example of courage and sacrifice, and it is up to us to keep that flame alive so that Mozambique remains a sanctuary of peace and progress”.
