Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Tuesday urged the country’s armed forces to remain alert to the threats facing the country due to the abundance of natural resources and the desired level of social and economic development.
“The threats the country is facing are transcendental due to the abundance of natural resources and the stage of development to which it aspires,” said Nyusi, speaking at the closing of the 19th Coordinating Council of the Ministry of National Defence.
All branches of the Armed Forces, he continued, must be prepared for a robust response to the risks facing the country, maintaining the ability to defend national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
With this in mind, he said, investments in the Armed Forces must be carried out strategically, investing in infrastructure, equipment and training to meet current challenges.
“The Armed Forces should be an example and model in the management of state assets, they cannot be in the news for wasting of resources and corruption,” added Nyusi.
The Mozambican head of state stressed that the Ministry of National Defence should be proactive in finding solutions that increase the self-sufficiency of the Armed Forces and reduce dependence on the State Budget.
“It does not make sense that, even in times of peace, the Armed Forces cannot produce food when far less capable and prepared people do it,” said Nyusi.
The Mozambican head of state made no mention of attacks by armed groups in the north of the country, but insecurity in the region has been singled out as a new and serious threat to stability in the area, which is rich in natural gas and preparing to stage production of natural gas from the beginning of the 2020s.
