Mozambique’s president Filipe Nyusi on Friday demanded the complete disarmament of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) armed wing before the country’s general elections on 15 October.
“Renamo must say how many officers they have, who are they and where will they deliver their weapons”, Nyusi said as leader of the ruling party Frelimo.
“Mozambique’s citizens have the right to vote in a peaceful atmosphere, to freely choose their candidates without fearing a new armed conflict”, he said.
The government signed a memorandum of understanding with Renamo last year and in April, Renamo’s president Ossufo Momade demanded for the first time the integration of its officials into the country’s defence and security schools.
Since the signing of the memorandum in August 2018, the government has appointed 14 Renamo officers in the Armed Forces.
