Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, has called for a “relentless fight against organised crime” and warned that the internal security sector faces “multiple challenges” in the country.
“The fight against crime, in particular organised crime, will be relentless, so that each and every Mozambican or foreign citizen feels calm and protected,” said Nyusi, in an address during a ceremony in Maputo to swear in the new minister of interior, Pascoal Ronda. He replaces Arsénia Massingue, who had held the post since 2021.
The area of internal security “faces multiple challenges,” said the head of state, citing kidnappings and abductions, money laundering, as well as environmental and cyber crimes – new types of offences that challenge the forces of law and order to combat them more effectively.
In terms of the threat to territorial integrity and sovereignty, he continued, the country’s defence and security forces must continue their fight against what he called “terrorism” – with its clearest expression in the actions of armed groups that have been carrying out attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique.
The president also called for a “relentless fight against road accidents” as claiming many lives and causing property damage on the country’s roads every year.
Nyusi advocated more and better training for staff at the Ministry of Interior and its modernisation, in order for them to effectively carry out the mission entrusted to the sector.
He stressed that there was a great deal of expectation surrounding the new minister, given his long career in the national police, where he served as commander-general before his retirement from that force.
