Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, called at a meeting of the governing party, Frelimo, of which he is leader, for a “relentless fight” against corruption, which he said undermined governance and the well-being of the country’s population.
“From within [the party], we remain steadfast in the fight, without truce, against corruption, a phenomenon that affects governance and undermines confidence in institutions,” Nyusi said in closing a session on Sunday of a meeting of the party’s central committee taking place in Matola, in Maputo province.
Nyusi stressed that fighting corruption should be a commitment of all members of Frelimo as well as senior state officials.
“We will continue to vehemently fight corruption within the party and in the institutions to which we belong,” he declared.
Nyusi called for respect for ethics and moral principles in the conduct of state affairs, stressing that the fight against corruption has no party colours.
He also expressed his “unwavering” commitment to peace in the face of armed violence in the north and centre of the country.
In the central committee session that ended on Sunday, the Frelimo leader announced plans to hold the party’s next congress from 23 to 28 September next year, with a view to discussing “fundamental issues” to do with the party.
Nyusi is in his second and final term as president of Mozambique, having won two general elections.
At the meeting, the first since the 2019 elections, central committee members analysed reports from the party’s political bureau and from the verification committee and the office for the preparation of 2018 municipal and 2019 general elections, in which both a new parliament and president are to be chosen.
The central committee assessed the party’s draft budget and the reports on the government’s five-year plan and 2021 social economic plan.
The meeting had been postponed several times due to restrictions imposed as part of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
