Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, has called for the rational and sustainable use of marine resources, noting their importance for the survival of millions of Mozambicans.
“The lives of millions of Mozambicans depend on the seas and oceans, so preserving their ecosystems and properly exploiting the resources that flow from them is an existential imperative for us as a species, and an indispensable condition for the sustainable development that we so desire,” Filipe Nyusi said in a message on World Oceans Day, celebrated this Monday.
The protection of marine ecosystems such as mangroves is fundamental to the maintenance of marine habitats and the reproduction of species crucial for the food security of Mozambicans and for the economy, the message reads.
“We urge all our compatriots to join with the efforts of the Mozambican government and use our marine resources in a rational, responsible and sustainable way, to reverse the degradation of marine ecosystems, exacerbated by climate change,” he stressed.
President Nyusi said that the preservation of a healthy, clean and inclusive marine and ocean ecosystem should be a collective commitment, and that Mozambicans could not remain indifferent to the present and future condition of the oceans, since the country’s life is inextricably linked to Indian Ocean ecosystems.
