The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has called on all sectors of society to be guided by a collective responsibility for protecting the environment. The head of state was speaking yesterday morning in Matutuíne at the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Gorongosa National Park¸ the Maputo Special Reserve and the Marromeu National Reserve.
This responsibility must be manifested, the president said, in policies on land, forests, hunting, wildlife and tourism, so that there is a balance between economic interests and the need for a sustainable future for coming generations.
“The government will always be at the forefront of the battle for the conservation of biodiversity in the country, favouring partnerships that bring added value not only for the conservation of biodiversity, but also in the inclusion of the surrounding people in the management of natural resources,” President Nyusi said.
The president also noted that the celebrations were taking place 15 months after cyclones Idai and Kenneth destroyed so much of the goods and means of livelihood of communities, as well as taking lives and destroying infrastructure, including in the Gorongosa National Park .
“These extreme phenomena are a warning to all of us regarding the way we look at the environment and, in particular, the conservation of biodiversity,” the Mozambican president said.
