The president of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, on Thursday called on the new minister of justice, constitutional and religious affairs to work towards creating an efficient and vigorous justice system as part of the fight against corruption.
“We need a justice system that is efficient, transparent and that vigorously fights all forms of corruption and injustice,” said the head of state, after swearing in Mateus Saize.
Chapo asked the new minister to take action to promote the rule of law and guarantee access to justice for Mozambicans, stressing that this is one of the ways to guarantee peace in a country that has been wracked by post-election turmoil in recent weeks.
“I challenge you to lead with integrity and work to restore citizens” trust in public institutions and in the justice administration system in particular,” said the president.
Among other positions, Saize has served as a member of the Constitutional Council, taking office in 2014.
Chapo also asked the new minister to maintain a dialogue with different religious denominations in the search for “social harmony” in Mozambique.
“The different religious groups must be fundamental partners of the government in promoting peace, well-being and sustainable national development,” he said.
Also on Thursday, the president appointed and swore in the secretaries of state for the provinces and for Maputo City, which include Silva Livone for Niassa province, Fernando Bemane de Sousa for Cabo Delgado, Cristina Xavier Mafumo for Tete, Lourenço Lindonde for Manica and Vicente Joaquim for Maputo City.
Also appointed were Avelino Muchine for Zambezia province, Cecília Gerónimo Francisco Chamutota for Sofala, Plácido Pereira for Nampula, Bendita Lopes for Inhambane, Jaime Neto for Gaza and Henriques Bongence for Maputo province.
Chapo asked the new secretaries of state to foster dialogue between the various social strata in order to promote national unity, and to ensure the participation of citizens in decision-making processes.
“The weak performance of the state in providing basic services in some parts of the country could contribute to a lack of citizen confidence in public institutions,” Chapo warned the new secretaries, asking them to encourage “tolerance” to improve social stability.
