Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi called on Monday in Maputo for the constitutional courts of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) to be factors of peace and stability by protecting human dignity.
“The effective functioning of constitutional jurisdiction is a factor of peace and stability and a guarantee of respect for human dignity and fundamental rights,” said Nyusi.
The Mozambican head of state was speaking during the opening of the 6th Conference of Constitutional Courts of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CJCPLP), which kicked off today in the Mozambican capital.
“Constitutional courts are a fundamental pillar of the Democratic Rule of Law, they are guardians of the Constitution, which assumes responsibility for defending the constitutional order and materializing constitutional justice”, emphasized the Mozambican President.
Filipe Nyusi stressed that magistrates who work in those bodies must be exposed to public criticism, given that they have an essential role in the administration of justice.
The Mozambican President urged the constitutional courts to be sharp in monitoring the interdependence between the various powers, stressing that collaboration must be carried out in strict compliance with constitutional legality.
He also defended the need to educate the population about fundamental laws in order to provide citizens with knowledge that allows them to defend human dignity.
President Nyusi stressed that this conference is one of the ways to strengthen ties between the countries of the CPLP community , which has its roots in common history and language.
The 6th General Assembly of the Conference of Constitutional Courts of Portuguese-Speaking Countries is held under the motto “Constitutional Jurisdictions and Other Powers”.
