The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, yesterday appealed to the Bank of Mozambique to confer with the commercial banks regarding the resumption of financial operations in the north of Cabo Delgado.
The head of state was speaking after inaugurating the Metical Square in the municipal town of Mueda, Cabo Delgado province, accompanied by his Swiss counterpart, Alain Berset, who is on a visit to Mozambique.
The head of state justified his request with the improvements in security apparent in the north of the province, a factor encouraging the return of the displaced to their areas of origin, currently estimated by the government at more than 200,000 people.
Commercial banks and other business operators were forced to suspend their activities by the resurgence of terrorist actions throughout the northern axis of Cabo Delgado province, the districts of Mocímboa da Praia, Palma, Macomia, Quissanga, Muidumbe and Nangade being worst affected.
However, the intervention of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), with the support of local militias and the military missions of Rwanda and the SADC, has allowed the return of normality in these areas, alongside the reestablishment of basic social services and the reconstruction of strategic economic infrastructure for the population.
In Nangade, Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia and Muidumbe, where security is already being felt and residents are resuming their normal lives, President Nyusi wants to see banking services resume.
