The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, arrived this Sunday night in Abu Dhabi for a three-day official visit at the invitation of the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In the UAE, Filipe Nyusi will hold official talks with his counterpart and an agreement and two memoranda of understanding may be signed on economic, technical, military, public security and combating terrorism cooperation. The signature of the last two, however, has not yet been confirmed as negotiations are taking place between the delegations of the two countries, according to the Mozambican ambassador to Abu Dhabi, Tiago Castigo.
Filipe Nyusi is expected to meet the Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the country’s vice president, and visit the Port of Dubai, managed by DP World, which also participates in the management of the Port of Maputo.
The president will also meet some of the 170 Mozambicans residing in the UAE.
The suspension of visa requirements between the two countries is not immediately foreseen, but could be on the table, since Mozambique is still drawing up a list of countries whose citizens will be exempt from entry visas under the Economic Acceleration Measures Package.
Another matter that will be addressed is the resumption of direct flights between Dubai and Maputo by Emirates Airline, with a meeting scheduled between Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, who is part of the Mozambican delegation, and an Emirates Airline vice-president, according to diplomat Tiago Castigo.
The President of the Republic is accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo Ndlovu, and of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala; by the deputy ministers of Economy and Finance, Carla Loveira, and of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Cecília Chamutota; by Mozambique’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Tiago Castigo and Mozambican consul in the United Arab Emirates, Alberto Cuvelo, plus members of staff of the Presidency of the Republic and of other state institutions.
