Mozambique presents plans for 3,800 km North-South railroad

Mozambique’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has unveiled plans to build a 3,800-kilometre north-south rail link budgeted at US$20 billion.
The North-South Corridor project, which awaits completion of feasibility studies, was presented at an infrastructure forum held today in Tete in the centre of the country.
The meeting brought together several ministries, business people of different nationalities and international financial entities and was intended to serve as a showcase for some of the great projects envisioned by the government.
It would cost about US$20 billion dollars to build the 3,800 kilometres of new railway to connect existing lines between the coast and the interior. The project would provide links to existing ports and those contemplated in the coming years.
“It’s a project that does not yet have completed feasibility studies, but we think it’s time for us to bring this idea up and discuss it with investors,” forum spokeswoman Odete Simeão said.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications presented five other projects during the Infrastructure Forum, including an airport village in Nacala and a technology park in Mocuba, Zambezia.
