Mozambique has the highest electricity consumption growth in Southern Africa, with demand growing 12 percent in the last five years, well above the three percent regional average.
With national consumption levels 850 megawatts, electricity production and supply systems are now operating at their limit.
Mateus Magala, chairman of the Electricity Council of Mozambique (EDM), says the country needs another 100 megawatts per year to meet the growth in demand. This means the construction of several thermoelectric power stations the size of the new Maputo combined-cycle power plant, whose first stone was laid recently with completion expected in 2018.
Magala said that the project, combined with the rehabilitation of the Mavuzi and Chicamba hydroelectric plants in the province of Manica, to be completed in December, would diversify the energy matrix and increase EDM’s power generation from the current 206 megawatts to 315 megawatts from mid-2018.
The achievement of these goals would contribute to the industrialisation of the country, which requires an enormous quantity and quality of electricity.
