Rehabilitation of public infrastructures affected by Cyclone Idai in the district of Buzi, in Sofala, will begin by the start of next month (September, Miramar reports.
After more than a year, the Post-Idai Reconstruction Office has announced that everything is being done to see that the works start in late August, or mid-September at the latest.
Francisco Pereira, director of the Post-Idai and Kenneth Reconstruction Office, said that funds were available for rehabilitation works not only in Sofala, but in other parts of the country, such as Manica and Cabo Delgado.
Multi-sectoral teams had been on the ground to see what should actually be done when work actually starts, he said.
“We have a budget of just over US$100 million to spend in Sofala, Manica and a little in Cabo Delgado, Pemba and Ibo Island by the end of the year,” Francisco Pereira said.
“We expected to invest about US$140 million this year, which has already been reduced because of Covid-19 financial issues, and many people from NGOs who were to do the works were forced to leave.”
The programme initially planned was for work costing US$236 million, but this was reduced to US$144 million.
