Portugal’s defence minister on Friday estimated that Portuguese soldiers who will be training special troops in Mozambique will be on the ground there by April.
“There are daily developments. The Portuguese and Mozambican military are working on the design of their part so that soon – hopefully during April – the training work can begin on the ground,” said Gomes Cravinho.
Gomes Cravinho stressed that this will be “a mission to train commandos and marines so that the armed forces of Mozambique have all the necessary skills for the defence of sovereignty in their own country”.
The Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado (north) has been under attack since October 2017, by insurgent groups linked to radical Islamic organisations and classified since the beginning of 2020 by Mozambican and international authorities as a “terrorist threat”.
