The Portuguese Parliament on Friday approved two draft resolutions to put the humanitarian and security crisis in Mozambique on the international agenda during the Portuguese presidency of the European Union, which starts on 1 January.
The draft resolutions, presented by the CDS-People’s Party and the People-Animals-Nature party (PAN), were approved with abstentions by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and the Ecologist Party and a favourable vote by all the other parties.
The debate that preceded the vote on the draft resolutions, scheduled by the CDS-PP, gathered consensus on the need for urgent action to put the Mozambican question on the international and European Union agenda, three years after the start of attacks by armed groups in Cabo Delgado province, which have already caused at least 2,000 deaths and some half a million displaced persons.
The draft resolutions will now be discussed by the Commission for Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities.
