The Portuguese government, through the Camões Cooperation Institute, today signed with the Mozambican authorities the third phase of the Portuguese cooperation cluster to support the preservation and rehabilitation of the local historical and cultural heritage.
According to a note from the Portuguese embassy in Maputo, the agreement was signed this Thursday on Mozambique Island by the Mozambican Minister for Culture and Tourism, Edelvina Materula, and the Portuguese ambassador to Mozambique, Maria Amélia Paiva.
In its second phase, for the period 2015-2018, the Portuguese cooperation cluster on Mozambique Island included a budget of one million euros for implementation, according to figures provided to Lusa by the embassy in 2019.
The agenda for this new working visit to the island, according to the note, also includes the signing of another agreement with the University of Lúrio, which is to be represented on the occasion by the deputy rector, Sonia Maciel.
“This Agreement will allow for the deepening of the scientific activities foreseen for the rehabilitation component of the cultural heritage of the cluster,” the note said.
The new working visit to the island of Mozambique will begin on Wednesday, with formal handover by the Portuguese embassy of equipment for the new computer room to the local Polytechnic Institute.
As part of the bicentennial celebrations as a city in 2018, Portugal organised a total of seven exhibitions on the island and in Maputo, two seminars, as well as two documentaries and another seven activities linked to citizenship and good practice.
Occupying an area of one square kilometre, Ilha de Moçambique (Mozambique Island), in Nampula province, was Mozambique’s first capital, with several historical monuments standing, such as the Fortress of São Sebastião.
In 1991 UNESCO declared Mozambique Island a World Heritage Site.
