Portugal’s head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has expressed his sadness at the death of Daviz Simango, president of Mozambique’s opposition MDM party, recalling him as a key figure in the African country’s political life.
Simango, who was also mayor of Beira, died on Monday at the age of 57.
In a note published on his official website, Rebelo de Sousa said: “Transmitting his heartfelt condolences to all Mozambicans and the family of Daviz Simango, the President of the Republic recalls an indispensable figure in the political life of Mozambique.”
Simango had on 13 February been airlifted to a health unit in South Africa due to a sudden health problem, according to his family. At no time was the nature of the problem specified.
In statements to Lusa, the secretary-general of the MDM, José Domingos, confirmed Simango’s death in a health unit in South Africa in the early hours of Monday, saying he himself had received the news on Monday morning from family members.
Domingos said that Simango “had complications when some family members of his residence were diagnosed with the new coronavirus”, but left the determination of the cause of death to medical sources. “It is a doubt of ours, it has to be medical sources to confirm.
“Already in South Africa, he was showing good signs, but we ended up losing our great leader, the founder of the MDM and president of the Beira municipal council,” he lamented.
