The export of graphite mined in Balama through the commercial port of Pemba since September 2024 is putting an end to the long-standing dependence on the Port of Nacala. This strategic change represents an important milestone for the economy of Cabo Delgado province.
With this new logistics route, the Port of Pemba, managed by the Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM) company, has significantly increased its annual cargo capacity, from 250,000 to 400,000 tons. The measure not only strengthens the port infrastructure, but also facilitates the operations of mining companies, which no longer have to undergo time-consuming and costly trips to Nacala.
This progress was made possible by the construction of a modern 10,000-tonne transit warehouse built inside the port area by Grindrod Logística Moçambique, in partnership with Twigg Exploration Mining.
During the inauguration ceremony, the then Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado, António Supeia, cited this achievement as representing “a decisive step for local economic development”, and highlighting its positive impact in terms of revenue and job creation in the region.

In addition to graphite, the Port of Pemba maintains its strategic importance in the North of the country, continuing to operate in the movement of fuels, wood and clinker.
The reinforcement of the logistics infrastructure and the increase in port activity consolidate Pemba’s role as one of the main drivers of economic growth in Cabo Delgado.
