The National Statistics Institute predicts that between 2017 and 2027, Mozambique has been experiencing a population growth of over 10 million inhabitants in ten years.
The fourth population census, released in 2017, indicated 26,899,105 million inhabitants in Mozambique and, in the fifth census, to be released in 2027, the INE predicts a total population of 36 million inhabitants.
The 2027 Census project was launched today in Maputo, in a ceremony in which the project was presented as the first to be carried out entirely digitally, with the aim of reducing errors, ensuring greater efficiency and speed in data processing, and reducing the time for counting. For example, it used to take two years for the preliminary count, but with this system, this will be reduced to six months.
The 2027 Census will begin in August 2027, to be held across the country for 15 consecutive days.
The 2027 Census will cost around US$110 million (just over seven billion meticais), and will be implemented in three phases: Pre-census, corresponding to preparation, fundraising, hiring of labour and acquisition of materials; Census – data collection; and Post-Census, corresponding to data collection and dissemination.
