Residents of Mapate, in Muidumbe district, Cabo Delgado province, announced yesterday that they had found human remains on Friday (17-01), presumably the victims of terrorist attacks.
Community sources told Lusa that the remains were found near the Mitambo stream, about 10 kilometres from the village.
“There are three bodies. I believe they were killed by the terrorists,” one source said.
The suspicion is that these are the remains of people killed in attacks that occurred in the area in the first quarter of 2024.
“Last year, terrorists attacked Mapate, and there were people captured whose whereabouts are still unknown to this day. I believe these are the remains that we found on Friday,” reported another source.
The gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has since October 2017 been facing an armed insurrection, with some attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist Islamic State group.
The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May 2024, in the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan troops supporting the country in the fight against the rebels.
