After almost two months subject to restrictions as a result of constraints on the South African side, the Ponta do Ouro border crossing in Maputo province reopened this weekend.
The National Migration Service (SENAMI) told ‘O País’ that constraints on the South African side supposedly related to the availability of health personnel for the control and validation of Covid-19 PCR tests had been overcome, and the crossing had resumed activities in full.
“The crossing point at Ponta do Ouro is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,” Horácio Cumbana confirmed on behalf of SENAMI in Maputo province.
Ponta do Ouro is probably the country’s most popular tourist crossing between Mozambique and South Africa.
Saturday was the first day of the resumption of activities. Traffic was below expectations, and no Covid-19 cases were recorded.
“Migratory flow at that post was quite reduced yesterday [Saturday], probably because citizens are not yet aware that it is open every day,” Cumbana noted.
Of the four border posts in Maputo province, only one – Goba – remains closed.
